What is it about?
We analyzed the relation between physical water scarcity and virtual water flows in Central Asia by using two water scarcity indices at the scale of sub-basin areas: water stress index (consumption-to-availability ratio) and water shortage index (water availability per capita).

Why is it important?
It is often suggested that virtual water flows from regions with abundant water resources to water scarce regions. In Central Asia, however, the opposite is the case, which makes it interesting to study these flows and their determinants there in more detail.
