Why is it important?

Most of the studies on household recycling that have investigated on knowledge/skills has focused on perceived knowledge/skills, rather than on actual skills. This paper questions the interchangeability of the two factors and suggests that they might be related to different determinants and aspects of environmental education.

Perspectives

The paper suggests that perceived and actual skills differ for both their determinants and consequences for environmental education. Perceived skills are important aspects to consider when the intent is to assess the individual willingness to perform an action. Actual skills are relevant for understanding if this action will be carried out effectively and efficiently. Hence, when planning environmental education interventions, the two factors provide distinct types of information.
