What is it about?
In most circumstances, racism encompasses an uncomfortable subject matter, meaning that, as much as possible, people avoid talking about it, a point Rob Eschmann skilfully makes very clear to the reader right from the beginning. To achieve this, he employs an engaging writing style to describe his own lived experience of ‘subtle’ racism and uneasiness among a small group of friends on campus while playing a game on Xbox.

Why is it important?
The author's account of his own lived experiences of racism and discrimination is not meant to be anecdotal in nature, but rather is extremely important in guiding the reader into a reflection that confronts a series of enduring and naturalised racist practices and behaviours in the US (oftentimes deemed innocuous by hegemonic whites) and their pernicious impacts on Afro-Americans.
Perspectives
The book makes a timely and relevant contribution both to the study of the societal impacts of masked racist ideologies widely fostered on social media and ways to resist this worrisome social phenomenon.
