Communities and their language use on Reddit

What is it about?

The paper analyses how the sociolinguistic concept of 'Community of Practice' can be applied to the social media platform Reddit. We combine innovative corpus-linguistic methods to investigate language use, user behaviour, and self-identification of users on the platform.

Why is it important?

We show that corpus methods are very useful for the sociolinguistic investigation of social media. Furthermore, our findings indicate that Reddit is a fascinating data source for sociolinguists.
