This article aims to analyse language rights in relation to groups of immigrant origin.

Why is it important?
The article argues that conventional approaches to minority groups’ rights based on a national versus immigrant minority distinction are not satisfactory for language claims in the two cities under study and that a contextual approach is better suited to conceptualising the recognition of language rights.
Perspectives
The contextualist approach may give rise to normative judgements about other rapidly changing transnational cases that go in the same direction.
