This paper attempts to explain why certain nouns in Arabic and Somali display more than one plural form. It argues that structural and semantic differences exist between so-called broken and sound plurals.

Why is it important?
A new approach to plural formation in Arabic and Somali is proposed. Plurality in internal plurals is shown to be different from that one in external plurals: internal plurals are mass and uncountable plurals while external plurals are distributive.
