What is it about?

In the digital era, technology plays a crucial role in assisting English learners to improve their pronunciation, enabling them to achieve greater intelligibility and comprehensibility. Its significance lies in providing immediate and consistent feedback, individualized learning opportunities, authentic input and repetition, enhanced motivation and engagement, as well as accessibility and flexibility. Ultimately, technology bridges the gap between limited classroom instruction and the need for continuous, personalized pronunciation practice, fostering clearer, more confident, and intelligible English communication. By promoting student-centered and technology-assisted learning, this approach also cultivates learner autonomy and reflective language development.

Why is it important?

This study explores the impact of an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)-based system, specifically BoldVoice app, on improving pronunciation skills among vocational higher education students learning English as a Lingua Franca (ELF), and making them more intelligible and comprehensible. The study shows that the ASR-based system, combined with collaborative learning, significantly improved ELF learners’ pronunciation skills. The integration of ASR-based system into the pronunciation learning addresses challenges in pronunciation teaching-learning such as limited class time and teacher feedback. Therefore, integrating ASR-based tools into curricula can enhance pronunciation teaching and further exploring other advanced features of ASR technology.

Perspectives

I hope this article provides valuable insights into the potential of ASR-based systems and collaborative learning in enhancing pronunciation skills for ELF learners. Readers are encouraged to consider the practical applications of these findings in their own teaching or learning contexts and explore innovative ways to integrate technology into language education. Additionally, I invite readers to reflect on the challenges and opportunities presented by ASR tools and contribute to further research in this promising area.
