Why is it important?

Praise is used widely in the field of speech-language pathology but there are well-documented potential negative side effects as it relates to motivation and academic achievement. Furthermore it likely gets in the way of the high quality, evidence-based practices we know support language interventions.

Perspectives

We hope this article helps to reframe the role of praise in language interventions and provide alternatives for SLPs to consider. We believe that we can foster engagement and positive, warm relationships that support language learning without relying on praise.
