What is it about?
In this chapter, we review recent research on social categorization. We begin by presenting a basic model of how categories operate in social perception. The model focuses in particular on the problems posed by the complexity of social stimuli. Then, we consider the role of emotion and motivation. Finally, we consider how categorizing the social world differs from other kinds of categorization.
