What is it about?

Whether the symmetry of Acheulean handaxes became progressively more refined over time has been controversial. Thanks to recent technical advances and archaeological discoveries it is becoming increasing clear a trend towards greater standardization and refinement of such tools did take place. The way in which this trend relates to cognitive evolution is explored in detail.

Why is it important?

This paper is important because it introduces new findings as to how symmetry can be assessed that has implications for understanding the place of stone tools in human cognitive evolution.

Perspectives

The paper was inspired by the a number of recent articles insisting that there was little to no tendency towards greater symmetry and refinement in the shape of Acheulean tools over period of a million years.
