What is it about?
Cholesterol can be oxygenated to give a family of bioactive oxysterols with different chemical structures . We report here evidences that according to their chemical strutures certain oxysterols such as 7-ketocholesterol can accelerate aging processes while others like dendrogenins may slow down aging processes. The mechanism and the signalling pathways related to aging are detailed.

Why is it important?
The populations of western countries are dramatically aging and the number of degenerative diseases linked to aging (neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, cancer, ...) is growing accordingly. We identified pharmacological targets on the cholesterol metabolism pathways that could be exploited to develop drugs that could slow down aging processes. We also highlight cholesterol metabolites with anti-aging properties suggesting that metabolic deficiency complementation and dietary interventions could offer soft solutions. these two approaches are offering new strategies to fight aging.
