What is it about?

This study investigated hearing impairment in individuals with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) in Germany. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of hearing impairment in 32% to 58% of patients with mild OI and 21% to 27% of patients with moderate to severe OI. The study involved ear microscopy, audiometry, stapedius reflexes, tympanometry, and OAEs to assess hearing in individuals attending the 2023 annual meeting of the German Association for Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Why is it important?

33% of patients with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) had hearing impairment. OI type III and IV showed significant differences in air-bone gap (ABG) and hearing threshold. Age was strongly correlated with hearing threshold, with 56% of patients between 40 and 50 years old experiencing hearing loss. Regular audiometry is recommended, especially for individuals with OI type I, and screening starting at 40 years should be considered.

Perspectives

Hearing loss is common in people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, particularly type I, especially as they age. Audiometry should be done when hearing loss is suspected. Screening starting at 40 years old should be considered. Providing information about middle ear surgery centers specializing in OI patients is crucial for better care.
