What is it about?

In industrialized countries, diseases of the circulatory system are still the major common cause of death. According to common doctrine in addition to a treatment with medication, lifestyle changes are required, too. For lifestyle changes the patient has to employ enormous self-management efforts, as it is very hard to maintain them without proper control and support. The telemedical assistance system called COMES® (Cognitive Medical Systems), which has been developed at the Heinz Nixdorf Lehrstuhl für Medizinische Elektronik der Technischen Universität München, is an eminent tool for supporting the continuation of life style changes.

Why is it important?

Among others, COMES® offers modules which enables the physician to define therapy goals. Now, automatically generated individual motivation messages encourage the patient to appropriate them.

Perspectives

A first study of increasing physical activity by COMES® motivation shows, that patients can be motivated significantly in order to achieve therapy goals.
