What is it about?

This chapter clarifies the basic concepts of the book. A “value” is defined as an abstract ideal which organizes systems of action as standards for consistent behavior. The relevant economics and management literature are reviewed to introduce the multifaceted concept of “spirituality.” The relationship between spirituality and values is also introduced, and Buddhism and Christianity are discussed as spiritual traditions that are both sources of values which influence the behavior of Buddhist and Christian entrepreneurs. Last, the chapter shows how the concept of “entrepreneur” is interpreted in the book, focusing on entrepreneurs’ ability to infuse spiritual values into business.

Why is it important?

It highlights some new interpretations of the concepts of value, spirituality and entrepreneurship. A standardized and substantive definition of spirituality cannot be given, either in the context of Buddhist or Christian relations, as both Buddhist and Christian entrepreneurs define the term as “interconnectedness,” or what is “beyond-material.”

Perspectives

This chapter contains some important and fundamental empirical evidence that is used in the argumentation about the concept of spirituality.
