What is it about?

The work is about the efficient synthesis of nucleotide sugars. It describes the method, gives examples of 9 nucleotide sugars (natural and unnatural) with their full spectroscopic characterization, and studies the influence of conditions on the efficiency.

Why is it important?

The method enables fast and efficient synthesis of nucleotide sugars and their analogs. This, in turn, can be a step forward in studying the role of sugars as cell markers and its possible utilization as new vaccines or as a treatment for various diseases.

Perspectives

Sugar chains are ubiquitous markers of the cells. They serve as the markers of blood types, allows for recognition of threats by the immune system, allows fertilization, and on the other hand allows attacking the cells by external pathogens. Theese phenomena are not well studied yet, mainly due to lack of a representative group of sugar markers. This can be changed by this fast and efficient method of sugar nucleotides.is.
