What is it about?

Year after year, many literary translations are marketed on international book fairs. But why is it that translations are published in a certain form at all? This article does not only consider the different actors involved in a transfer of literature. It also sheds light on how to evaluate their respective actions in relation to the needs and expectations of the targeted culture.

Why is it important?

In our global world, it is important to understand processes of cultural transfer as connection and exchange across the borders of cultures and spaces. The medium of literary translation offers a very productive basis for the analysis of cultural interconnections. At the same time, this allows for identifying mediators in strategic positions within large networks as carriers of cultural transfer.

Perspectives

The goal is to develop an interdisciplinary set of instruments tailored to each part of the process, thus enabling scholars to describe cultural transfer for the special case of literary translation completely and, if necessary, according to a defined standard.
