What is it about?

Halliday discusses key elements of language theory and analytic techniques that he considered particularly important for teachers to know. He illustrates these through numerous examples. He also presents valuable figures (networks) for teachers to use in mapping what learners need to learn.

Why is it important?

Halliday contributed a lot to educational theory during his long career. This is his final paper on the topic, a "virtuoso" piece that succinctly introduces readers to many key elements of his thinking about language in education.

Perspectives

Fortunately, the paper emerged through the work of the Halliday & Hasan Archive Project (https://asfla.net/halliday-hasan-archive-project/), otherwise it would probably have been lost. In my view, it's a key resource for teachers to be able to draw on, as relevant to their particular contexts: a succinct explanation of ideas, together with wonderfully apt illustrations of applications.
