What is it about?

Study abroad is considered a great opportunity for second language development, including pragmatic competence, which is an essential part of L2 communicative competence. We have shown if L2 English learners' judgment accuracy and processing speed change after six months of returning home from studying abroad.

Why is it important?

In contrast to an abundance of studies regarding the positive effects of study abroad focused on second language pragmatic development, there are very few studies investigating the loss of pragmatic competence (L2 request) after study abroad. Furthermore, we adapted a psycholinguistic approach in analyzing data on L2 learners' reaction times when they judge the appropriateness of L2 request-making forms in a given context.

Perspectives

My co-author and I hope this article gives us a new perspective of the effects of study abroad on L2 pragmatic development. Study abroad, short or long, will end in the meantime and it will be an important issue to maintain once-elevated L2 pragmatic competence. This study will be of some help in designing pre/post-study abroad language programs
