This paper characterizes all of the RNA in a variety of horse tissues, including white blood cells from "Twilight" the horse the reference genome sequence is based on. This allows us to map and describe the genes present in these horse tissues

Why is it important?
Most annotations of genomes (where the genes and other features are) rely on computer predictions and comparisons with other species. To work out the actual genes in a non-model species like the horse you need to reconstruct the transcriptome - all the RNA produced in cells in different tissues. This is what this paper is about. It makes studying genes and proteins in the horse easier as you at least have a sequence to start from
