What is it about?
Genetic material from plants, animals, and microorganisms makes up genetic resources, which have many uses, including the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and the improvement of crops and livestock, among others. Seventeen countries, known as megadiversity countries, house 60–80 percent of the world’s species. The Nagoya Protocol to the Convention on Biological Diversity focuses on access to genetic resources and benefi t sharing.
