What is it about?
Clean energy from wind and solar sources can help combat climate change. However, these sources can often be unreliable. To solve this problem, energy storage systems are needed. Hydrogen energy storage systems are a good option, as they are versatile and can be used in various ways. Scotland is keen on using these hydrogen storage systems, but making them affordable is essential. This study presents a case of a farm in Glensaugh, where the existing system could not meet all the energy needs. The authors proposed two alternative systems. One of them uses solar panels and stores the extra energy as hydrogen. The other achieves the same with wind energy. They found that the solar hydrogen system could meet the farm's entire transportation fuel needs and about 35% of its energy needs. It also had the advantage of being cheaper. As a result, the solar option was preferred, but the wind hydrogen system was not far behind. It could provide most of the energy and about 44% of the fuel for transport.

Why is it important?
Storing renewable energy can make it more reliable. Enhancing hydrogen storage systems and utilizing them in places such as farms can help with this. In the future, it might be possible to combine wind and solar sources for better results. Moreover, farms could even consider selling the extra hydrogen produced. KEY TAKEAWAY: Improving energy storage systems can make the usage of renewable energy a reality. Hydrogen offers a variety of options for achieving this. But it is important to ensure that these systems are cost effective and adaptable to different needs and situations.
