What is it about?

This chapter tells the story of a compound that is almost ignored in the West since it is derived from the much-maligned palm oil i.e. tocotrienol, which is basically an isomer of Vitamin E and a sister of tocopherol. Surprisingly it is much more potent than tocopherol in its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. And it plays a variety of roles in promoting health and preventing diseases.

Why is it important?

Since there has been an incessant attack on palm oil especially from the West, its contribution in being a rich source of tocotrienol has been largely ignored. Tocotrienol which has not been investigated thoroughly for being an elusive compound was being discussed in this chapter. We looked at the multiple roles it plays in conferring protection against cancer as well as a whole litany of ailments including cardiovascular, metabolic, autoimmune, bone, and neurological diseases.

Perspectives

This chapter has highlighted the wonders of tocotrienol and although many of the researches were conducted in the laboratory it is hoped that more randomized clinical trials will be carried out on a global scale in the near future and would confirm the benefits of mother nature's hidden gift to mankind - tocotrienol.
