What is it about?

During the 19th century, interest to establish chronologies to explain human past developments appeared. Such efforts were based on socio-cultural aspects, sustaining the argument of consecutive social phases such as: savagery, barbarian and civilization stages.

Why is it important?

In 1836, Christian Jurgensen Thomsen proposed an alternative conception based on industrial and technological development aspects. The new created system proposed three stages to understand Prehistory: Stone, Bronze and Iron ages, which although no longer unanimously accepted, still illustrate the close relationship between the development of metallurgy and human culture. Therefore the history of metal technologies is considered a fundamental part of human history.
