What is it about?

Breathing for optimal health starts with breathing through the nose in the daytime and during the night. Functional nasal breathing rehabilitation (FNBR) is a comprehensive but relatively simple approach that works on correcting functional causes of mouth breathing and nasal obstruction. The program was delivered online over 4 weeks and involves theory and a range of practical exercises requiring daily practice with formal and informal breathing exercises. Participants reported that the program was easy to implement and effective in reducing symptoms and improving nasal breathing ability.

Why is it important?

There are so many benefits from nasal breathing throughout the body and it is unfortunate that many people can’t do this as well as they would like to. Medical and surgical solutions to improving nasal breathing can help but may not always be completely effective because functional issues that have developed from nasal disuse can persist despite these sorts of treatments.

Perspectives

Functional nasal breathing rehabilitation (FNBR) is a comprehensive approach that recognised that the nose is part of a whole breathing system. It combines local nasal exercises, sensory training, relaxation and whole body breathing exercises.
