What is it about?
Based upon eight field surveys conducted between May 2011 and May 2012, we demonstrate seasonal drops in subsurface pH and aragonite saturation state. Low pH values of 7.79 to 7.90 and low aragonite saturation state values of 1.13 to 1.40 dominated subsurface waters in October and November, where carbonate biominerals in calcic shells and skeletons may begin to dissolve.

Why is it important?
Our data show that, the North Yellow Sea may represent one of the systems in the China seas most vulnerable to the potentially negative effects of ocean acidification.
