What is it about?
This paper describes the software that was developed to retrieve greenhouse gas measurements made by the UK Met Office Airborne Research Interferometer Evaluation System (ARIES) on board the UK's Atmospheric Research Aircraft. By considering a number of simulated environments, this paper also presents a characterisation of the performance of such a retrieval, including errors.

Why is it important?
The technical aspects and simulated capacity of the ARIES presented in this paper help to lay the foundations for all future retrievals made by this instrument.
