What is it about?
We use data from a network of ground-based stations (https://www2.acom.ucar.edu/irwg) to determine whether measurements from a satellite based instrument (MOPITT) provide the same values. Both an overall bias and bias drift are determined.

Why is it important?
Validation of instrument measurements are important to ensure that different instruments are measuring the same quantities. This is necessary so that measurements from different instruments can be used to interpret different aspects of a problem and provide a coherent conclusion. Additionally, with the long timeseries recorded by the satellite instrument, researchers would like to analyse trends in the carbon monoxide data. The validation performed in this paper will help to account for any instrument drift and ensure trends are correctly analysed.
