What is it about?

We used cashew nut shells to remove harness from groundwater. We came up with design parameters for an actual filter that can be used in low-income communities. Groundwater samples were collected from a village in Dodoma, Tanzania, where some of the boreholes had been abandoned due to the water hardness problem. Initially, we used synthetic hard water to test the biomaterials for water hardness removal. Later, we applied the materials for real groundwater treatment in a column (down-flow) setting.

Why is it important?

People in low-income communities suffer due to poor access to clean and safe water. This study provide information for a low-cost filter design that can filter water hardness and produce about 25 liters of drinking water per day.

Perspectives

This is good quality publication. Gives engineers and scientists innovative approaches to tackle community water problems.
