What is it about?

The article critically discusses the role of indicators, with particular reference to sustainability issues and the Covid-19 pandemic. The distinction between “cognitive values” and “ethical values” is assumed as fundamental in discussing the relationship between indicators and public policies.

Why is it important?

Keeping ethical and cognitive values separate should make it possible to: (i) develop methodological reflections on the construction of indicators, imagining a broad range of measurement options that can – and should – be scrutinised from different angles); (ii) be more sensitive to the risk of muddling goals and indicators.

Perspectives

I think indicators can be helpful in policy issues provided that they are appropriately conceptualised and without believing they can solve any problem by themselves.
