What is it about?

Accelerated by the normative turn in research and innovation policy toward missions, social innovation is nowadays a central element on policy agendas, from the urban and regional level to the national and subnational level of the European Commission and the OECD. Addressing the largely underexplored research field of measuring social innovation, in the following, we set out future directions of research by introducing a current approach to grasp social innovation at different analytical levels: organizational innovativeness, regional innovation capacity, and resonance, to position social innovation in the broader field of innovation.

Why is it important?

The question of measurement becomes even more urgent, as the lack of data is one of the main factors hampering targeted support for social innovation. To understand the conditions for and the actions taken towards transformative change, it is essential for policymakers, investors and innovators to obtain early information on relevant needs, actors and potential solutions, as well as on social innovation capacities
