What is it about?
The article discusses the Christmas Bands of the Western Cape, South Africa and their production of local musical aesthetics in their band styles. Oral transmission has imbued the bands with a unique local sound, which encompasses the idiosyncrasies passed on generationally. The article investigates the increasing involvement of younger musically trained members at the level of musical directors in different bands and to what extent these younger members recognise this local sound as unique and worthy of retention.
