What is it about?
The rise of Spiritualism in the nineteenth century coincided with a time of 'imperial anxiety' in British history. This chapter proposes that the emergence of ancient Egyptian 'spirits' and objects in Spiritualist séances of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries suggests a bid to legitimise the British occupation of Egypt by suggesting modern Caucasian people as the 'inheritors' of ancient Egyptian civilisation.
