I investigate how the case for environmental determinism was presented to the British government through the lens of Highland destitution Specifically, I assess how arguments around climate were presented to government during enquiries into the condition of the Highlands and Islands.

The evidence highlights closer ties drawn between climatic challenge at home and a beneficial climate overseas, and the need for government assistance to accomplish the redistribution of people to the colonies.
Perspectives
Climate-driven migration does not just happen 'somewhere else'. This chapter is part of a wider historical study of those Scots who chose migration and emigration as their response to an unfavourable climate.
