What is it about?
The ratio Ca2+/Mg2+ can indicate the changes in seawater associated with global warming as well as negative effects on well being of corals. Therefore a simple, fast and robust chromatographic method for determination of these metals is proposed. For this purpose, a monolithic silica rod column with covalently attached hydroxyethyl iminodiacetic acid was used. The chelation is dominant retention mechanism that minimizes the effects of high ionic strengths and huge excesses of alkali metal cations.
