What is it about?

The increasing use of cocaine during breastfeeding has led to growing concern about exposureof infants. Therefore, to study this exposure, a new method to analyze cocaine and benzoylecgonine in breastmilk was developed. The proposed extraction method using carbon nanotubesis simple, efficient, and demonstrates good sensitivity and suitability todetermine cocaine and benzoylecgonine at typical levels found in breast milk.

Why is it important?

Breastfeeding is essential for infant health. Breast milk is an unconventional matrix, but it has the advantage of easy and noninvasive collection. Magnetic carbon nanotubes proved to be a simplified, miniaturized and low-solvent organic sample preparation to analyze cocaine and benzoylecgonine.

Perspectives

This study shows important results that can effectively help medical programs advisenursing mothers aware of drug migration to breast milk, besides the risks of infant drug exposition.
