What is it about?

We describe a form of severe and potentially fatal community acquired pneumonia that is rarely seen in children, which occurred in a toddler that survived after several weeks of antibiotic and supportive therapy for two highly pathogenic bacteria, each of which on its own is capable of causing severe and extensive lung parenchymal destruction.

Why is it important?

Our experience shows that with an aggressive approach to management, young children could survive this otherwise fatal disease condition, perhaps due to the enormous regenerative capacity of the developing lung tissue at this tender age.

Perspectives

It was a delight to report this case for the awareness of paediatricians in Nigeria especially as to the best of our search in Nigerian literature no such case of necrotising pneumonia has been reported.
