What is it about?

Serotonin syndrome is a neglected emergency. It occurs due to a surge in serotonin levels due to an inappropriate dose of SSRIs, addition or initiation of serotonergic medicines or potential agonists. It is most important for physicians to know about the serotonin syndrome to prevent it and to promptly diagnose it if presented with it.

Why is it important?

Firstly serotonin syndrome mimicks a few conditions with similar symptoms and it is difficult to diagnose without proper drug history taking. Secondly most Physicians (except for neurologists and psychiatrists) do not know about the spectrum of agonist medicines. This leads to a number of purely iatrogenic cases.
