Why is it important?

Fish behavioural response when monitored in real-time can greatly improve our understanding of the aquatic ecosystem they occur in and improve our understanding of environmental stressors on the biological component. Tigerfish are considered threatened in South Africa and using radio telemetry techniques can help us improve the way we conserve this species and other large growling iconic fishes in the region.

Perspectives

This was a great study showing the use of activity sensors on fish and how this can be used as a behavioural variable when needing to remotely monitor fish. The next step is to successfully understand the behavioural responses to environmental stressors such as changes in flow, oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity and other parameters. We are almost there!
