What is it about?

Some methods have been developed in determining running-in and steady state phase of rolling and sliding contacts between two fresh surfaces. A new method, using finite element analysis is proposed to determine the transition between running-in to steady state phase.

Why is it important?

The important phenomenon in running-in of rolling-sliding contact may overlooked by engineers. This critical phase should be considered and designed carefully to prolong the life span of mechanical components where their surfaces are in contact.
