What is it about?

This survey study of 220 students shows the many and diverse ways in which they practice English informally online in their everyday lives. It shows that contrary to expectations, students use almost all language skills except speaking online.

Why is it important?

As the first study into the Online Informal Learning of English (OILE), this study opened a new field of investigation for Applied Linguistics researchers. It established a baseline regarding practices in a French context.

Perspectives

In retrospect, this simple study has opened up a whole field of research into many different aspects of informal language learning and continues to invite exploration of the subject.
