What is it about?

We investigated a method of analyzing wood samples taken from area surrounding nest cavities in order to determine the levels of a fungal enzyme, cellobiase, present in the wood. Then we looked for a relationship between the levels of cellobiase and the softness of the wood.

This research further investigates the relationship between woodpeckers, the wood in dead trees in which they excavate their nest cavities, and wood-decaying fungi.
