What is it about?
We demonstrated that lower vitamin D status (vitamin D insufficiency) was associated with an increased risk of subsequent spontaneous abortion in early pregnancy.

Why is it important?
Sponaneous abortion is a frequent complication to pregnancy. This is the first larger study on the association to vitamin D status. The risk of spontaneous abortion was increased by 250%, if the women had vitamin D insufficiency (s-25OHD below 20 mg/mL or 50 nmol/L), which is very frequent in pregnancy worldwide. Our study brings the hope that some of the many spontaneous abortions can be prevented by vitamin D.
