What is it about?

Bacteria in the gut of horses are altered in their numbers (here relative abundances) and diversity.

Why is it important?

This work indicates that: 1- Exercise training alters the gut microbiota in Standardbred Racehorses. 2- These changes might indicate important changes in these bacteria in a way that could help providing the horse host while exercising with more energy especially short chain fatty acids, butyrate, produced by these bacteria. 3- Targeting these bacteria in future studies might enhance producing probiotics to increase food digestibility in horses especially during exercise.

Perspectives

This study is about the link between exercise training and gut bacteria in Standardbred Racehorses and how exercise training alters these bacteria. This might be important to increase awareness about beneficial bacterial members that could help horse host to get as much as possible of energy out of food.
