What is it about?
A basic genomic and proteomic analysis of the effect of a triterpenoid, madecassoside, obtainable from the commonly found plant, Centella asiatica, on neuroinflammation. This research article shows that madecassoside is capable of activating antioxidative pathways while reducing neuroinflammation via the downregulation of pro-neuroinflammatory components (e.g. iNOS, COX-2, NF-kB) at both the genomic and proteomic levels, and through the reduction of ROS level in the microglia cell culture.

Why is it important?
It is important to highlight the importance of natural products as sources of active agents especially in areas where they are abundant. Aside from that, this research also emphasizes on the potential of using a compound known to have beneficial properties on skin health as an agent that may possibly reduce neuroinflammation.
