What is it about?

This article provides a context for reading Remedios Varo's autobiographical trilogy Bordando el manto terrestre as the culminating vision of an artist who repeatedly presents her protagonists as embarked on a journey which may be conceptualized as a rite of passage or initiation into 'higher knowledge'. The authors consider the figures as 'liminars', always about to cross a line, reaching for a desired object or poised to step into a different, transcendent reality.
