What is it about?

William Stringfellow perceived the power of death at work in the social wrongs of his era and throughout a fallen creation. He resisted death's false idols by living a biblical politics and an unrelenting faith. Stringfellow prophetic life and theology were outward signs of Christ's victory of life over death. Stringfellow's offers death-defying reminders of salvation in God, despite all that would diminish us.

Why is it important?

Stringfellow identified and shared many ways of resisting death in all its forms of evil, injustice, abuse, oppression. He notes the political character of the gifts of the Spirit described in First Corinthians (such as teaching, healing, administration, prophecy) and urges the exercise of these gifts are the essential tactics of resisting the power of death in the world. This calls for public ministry by Christians. As God enters the world and acts in the Incarnation, Christians are involved in politics and cannot be neutral about any public issue. Resisting the power of death in the world is faithful and humanizing, the way of life and the way Stringfellow lived, a sacramental activity that provides an outward and visible sign of the ultimate victory of life over death.
