What is it about?

Editorial of Modern Believing's special issue on the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, contrasting the spiritual agenda of society today with 50 years ago and noting the contrast between the contemporary spiritual searching and the anxieties of church leaders over declining numbers of churchgoers.

Why is it important?

The article is written from the perspective of liberal Christian theology, contributing to contemporary debates about whether mainstream churches should retrench or reach out to spiritual seekers.

Perspectives

This was the last issue of Modern Believing edited by me and was designed to offer a positive account of how, just as Vatican II responded to the need to change with the times, there are new opportunities for churches today.
