What is it about?

Kidney replacement therapy (KRT) is a specialised medical procedure for babies when their kidneys need extra support. In comparison to adults and older children, small babies need a gentle and continuous way to clean the blood and maintain the right balance of fluids and essential substances in the body. KRT can be given using peritoneal dialysis or blood based therapies. Although dialysis in smaller babies is technically difficult, specialised machines specifically designed for babies are now available to decrease the risk of complications and optimise clinical outcomes.
