What is it about?

Water pills (diuretics) are used to prevent fluid overload in patients with heart failure. Torsemide has several advantages, compared with similar drugs, but a recent trial did not find that it was better. We suggest several reasons why that trial was flawed, and why physicians should continue to prefer torsemide over the alternatives for long term treatment.

Why is it important?

Our piece is part of a pro and con debate about this class of drugs. This is important because heart failure is very common, and it leads to severe symptoms and risk of death. Finding the best treatment approach is essential.

Perspectives

Debates such as this, conducted respectfully by knowledgable clinicians, show how interpretations of study results can differ, but we all share the same goal of improving the care of our patients.
