What is it about?
The uterus has historically been considered a sterile organ. Our study in horses challenged that paradigm. We were able to detect a uterine microbiome in mares during estrus using three different diagnostic methods.

Why is it important?
Mares that have endometritis (an infection of the uterus) often have infertility. By identifying a core uterine microbiome in health, we may be able to diagnose a dysbiotic uterus and restore eubiosis to prevent endometritis and improve fertility in mares.
